Electrolysis at the waste-to-energy plant of AWG Wuppertal

DE | Wuppertal

FEST electrolyzers for the production of green hydrogen from waste incineration and hydrogen filling stations for public transport in Wuppertal

For Abfallwirtschaftsgesellschaft mbh Wuppertal (AWG), FEST is planning and implementing a 2 MW plant for the production of green hydrogen and for the refueling of regional public transport buses to expand hydrogen production.

The concept is known as the “Wuppertal Model” as a prime example of sustainable municipal energy management.

The green hydrogen produced from energy surpluses from the regional waste-to-energy plant is used highly efficiently to convert public transport buses in Wuppertal to hydrogen. In Wuppertal, the buses of the Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW) can fill up their hydrogen directly at AWG’s waste-to-energy plant.

Technical data

  • 2 MW plant (limited to 1 MW in the 1st step)
  • Platform system with 2 stacks
  • 2 containers, IGBT rectifier (Emotron), cooling and refrigeration unit
  • General contractor, compressor and high-pressure accumulator as well as a fuel pump for refueling the local bus fleet (300 bar)

Organic waste makes you mobile. More about the showpiece and the topic from the AWG: How Wuppertal turns garbage into mobility, read here.

FEST Infrastrukur mit Tankstelle Maximator: In Wuppertal können die Busse der Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW) ihren Wasserstoff direkt am Müllheizkraftwerk der AWG tanken.
