3 MW Electrolysis Plant for AAK Completed in a Short Timeframe

From Goslar to Karlshamn: 3 MW Electrolysis Plant Successfully Completed for AAK

At the end of June, a 3 MW PEM electrolysis plant will leave our facility in Goslar for Karlshamn, Sweden. There, it will be deployed by AAK, a global specialist in plant-based oils and fats – an industrial company where hydrogen is already an established component of production processes.

AAK has been using hydrogen as a process gas for many years, particularly for hydrogenation. The key factor here is the reliability of the hydrogen supply. This is precisely where the market’s focus is currently shifting: Companies are making targeted investments in their own hydrogen production capacities to make their processes more independent, transparent, and stable in the long term. Hydrogen is thus evolving from an external raw material into an integral part of the value chain.

Rapid implementation through standardized electrolysis systems

Our ability to complete a 3 MW plant within an ambitious project timeline is the result of our consistently standardized approach —including prefabrication—as well as our flexibility in reallocating internal resources.

FEST relies on containerized PEM electrolyzers that are fully integrated, pre-tested, and delivered as functional units directly from the factory. This pre-integration significantly reduces the number of interfaces required on-site, while making installation and commissioning more efficient and easier to plan. Combined with well-established supply chains and parallel project workflows, this creates a level of speed that makes industrial electrolysis projects much faster to implement today.

At the heart of the plant is PEM electrolysis, a technology that is particularly well-suited for dynamic and industrially integrated applications.

It enables rapid load adjustment, a compact design, and relatively easy integration into existing production environments. At the same time, end-to-end automation (from the stack through water treatment to process control) ensures stable and reliable operation.

It is precisely this combination of technological precision and system integration that makes modern electrolysis plants an integral part of industrial infrastructure today.

Sweden as a Dynamic Market for Industrial Decarbonization

Sweden is increasingly emerging as a dynamic market for industrial hydrogen applications in Europe. The high availability of low-carbon energy here aligns with political decarbonization goals and with industrial companies that are actively driving their transformation forward.

From the Project to Integration into the Production Process

With the delivery, the next phase begins for AAK: the integration of the electrolysis plant into the existing production process. This demonstrates that, in addition to the technology itself, what matters is how seamlessly it integrates into industrial processes and how reliably it operates there. For projects like this, FEST provides support throughout the entire lifecycle—from engineering and manufacturing through commissioning to service and operation.

Industrial applications are driving the ramp-up of hydrogen

Industrial customers are investing in electrolysis capacity today because they need concrete solutions to meet current process and decarbonization requirements.

This also changes expectations for systems: projects are getting larger, schedules are becoming more ambitious, and the demands on delivery capabilities and integration are increasing significantly.

Hydrogen has long been part of the industrial landscape, and its role there will continue to grow in the coming years.
