Our customer Abo Energy produces green hydrogen for regional logistics from wind energy with the PEM electrolyzers, which will be fully delivered at the end of 2024, and is thus driving forward the development of a hydrogen refuelling infrastructure for trucks and trailers in Hesse.
The project comprises a wind turbine, an electrolyzer and a hydrogen filling station with trailer filling station and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Hünfeld Schlitz exit on the A7 freeway.
The plant, which is due to go into operation in summer 2025, is the largest in Germany to date to directly couple a wind turbine with electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. This first project of its kind will further advance the introduction of emission-free, hydrogen-based logistics in Hesse.
The hydrogen is produced in two electrolysis systems with a total electrical output of five megawatts. At full load, 1,000 m³ or 90 kg of hydrogen can be produced every hour under standard conditions. This requires around 23 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which mainly comes from the wind turbine. In addition, the construction of solar parks is planned at the site in order to increase the proportion of green electricity generated on site. The system is also connected to the public electricity grid to secure the supply obligations.
The green hydrogen is then available at a hydrogen filling station for vehicle refueling and can also be filled into tankers on site. This enables flexible use, as the hydrogen can be sold to other filling stations or industrial customers. In the fifth year of operation, around 50 trucks are to be refueled with hydrogen on site every day. Over the year as a whole, almost 500 tons of green hydrogen will be produced on site, with the majority (approx. 400 tons) being sold locally.
